This Would Have Been Much Longer
Typepad would not let me write a post all afternoon and now that I am finally in again Patrick has just woken up and requires homage.
So reeeeeeeaaaaaallly quickly, this is the corn gratin recipe (which I see someone already posted a link to below, thank you) and this is the pickled onion/cranberry recipe. I will be back later this evening to continue our lovely discussion on food.
Oh, hey, in the meantime, help me out with a marital dispute, will you? Which do you think a child would be warmer wearing outside in twenty degree weather: sweatpants or jeans/cords?
Jeans/cords. Wind rips right through sweatpants.

I would say sweatpants, but, hell, I live in Australia, so what would I know?
Posted by:Sheridan | November 16, 2005 at 04:31 PM
Jeans always make me cold - the fabric doesn't seem warm, somehow. So, sweatpants. Or, jeans with long johns underneath or flannel lining.
Posted by:sinda | November 16, 2005 at 04:34 PM
I would say cords, definitely. Jeans? Maybe warmer than sweats, but it depends on the jeans & sweats. Crappy jeans vs. really good, thick sweats? The sweats might win. We have a 18 degree wind chill here right now, how 'bout you?
Your Thanksgiving dinner sounds delish...I can't wait until next Thursday. And we do a sweet potato dish with the sweet potatoes cut into about 1 inch thick slices and then baked with I think brown sugar & butter? My MIL cooks it...all I know is...it's yummy. I'm a cinnamon-sugar, butter kind of sweet potato girl. Mmm getting hungry.

Oh, and I hate it when I don't know what side someone is on regarding the marital dispute. Remember the sex entry? I bet we all thought you wanted it more and when we found out we were wrong? Whoo boy!
So I'm wondering which side you want us to argue...though I guess that wouldn't be very fair, huh? Damn.
Posted by:reenie | November 16, 2005 at 04:37 PM
Uh, sweats? I live in coastal California (it's a sunny, roughly 75 degrees outside and it's 3:00 in the afternoon)so I'm pretty ignorant about cold-weather stuff.
Thanks for the recipes! I will be using the corn one, sans bacon, unfortunately as DH is a vegetarian.

Cords. I say this as someone who's tried both.
But actually, nothing is particularly warm on days like today unless you have an extra layer underneath. Too bad you can't just do what we do for our daughter and put tights on underneath everything... I'm just happy I got a snow suit on sale a few weeks ago. Last year I felt like the bad, irresponsible mama. This year I'm prepped.

I'd say either with thermals. Jeans, cords or sweatpants by themselves won't keep anyone warm in 20ยบ weather (as I have discovered myself)! Good luck and let us know what the dicision & results were!
Posted by:Anna | November 16, 2005 at 04:46 PM
The nice insulated sweatpants? I vote for jeans. The wind whips right through sweats for me. Unless they are the insulated sweats, then I vote for those. Sweats + long underwear is a warm combo though.
Posted by:Kate | November 16, 2005 at 04:53 PM
Hmm. Newer sweatpants, with lofty fleece inside, would trap more body warmth ... but I guess I'd say the ideal lower-bod outfit in super cold weather would be thin, close-fitting thermals and a pair of looser jeans. Cords? I dunno. Depends on whether they're wide-wale or baby-wale (well, these things must be considered!) ... wide-wale would be puffy and warm, wouldn't they?

Neither keep me warm without long-johns under!
Posted by:Elin | November 16, 2005 at 05:17 PM
Jeans/cords with sweatpants underneath!
Posted by:shannon | November 16, 2005 at 05:23 PM
Gosh, I hope it's not down to 20 degrees there yet. You poor thing!
Unless they are extraordinary sweatpants with special insulating powers, I'd have to say cords, followed by jeans, followed by sweatpants. Although if pants are threadbare that always negates their warming power.

jeans/cords

SWEATPANTS!!!!
Posted by:The Aitch | November 16, 2005 at 05:49 PM
I am the sixth or so person to say: any of the above, but you need another layer of long johns or jammy pants underneath. Truly, at 20 degrees, I might even vote for snowpants with jammy pants underneath...
But are we talking about playing outside, or just getting out of the car to walk to school, etc.?
Posted by:katharine | November 16, 2005 at 05:49 PM
I'd vote sweatpants (or tracksuit pants, or "tracky daks" as we call them here) if they are the thick, fleecy kind.
But our coldest weather is probably your summer, so maybe my vote doesn't count!

Definitely not the jeans. They aren't insulated at all! This I am reminded of every xmas when I go back to Wisconsin and freeze my ass off because all I own are jeans. I am from California, man!

Jeans/Cords.
Also, would you post the recipe for broccoli with olives, vinigrette and feta?
Thank you,
Sarah

I wear tights or dance pants under jeans all the time, or jamies under sweats...but my absolute fav for warmth (and not for fasion) those flanel lined jeans!
neither alone keeps you very warm, especially if there is ANY wind.

Jeans/cords.

Move away from that hellhole, and closer to me, please. Then you can wear whatever you want and NEVER NEED WORRY AGAIN.

Jeans/cords. Grew up in North Dakota.
Posted by:Scissorbill | November 16, 2005 at 07:50 PM
20 degrees? Then I say: BOTH! lol
I'm thinking jeans. But really, 20 degrees? Brrrr...
Posted by:Ninotchka | November 16, 2005 at 07:50 PM
I'd say jeans/cords, for wind resistance. Although if it's THAT cold I would have to agree with everybody that you need layers, or some flannel-lined jeans. Glad it's not that cold here yet.
Posted by:MFA Mama | November 16, 2005 at 08:03 PM
Definitely jeans/cords.
Posted by:KimN | November 16, 2005 at 08:30 PM
Sweats.
Jeans/cords get cold in the winter unless there is another layer underneath, and then, if you're really unlucky, you get that chaffing (sp?) effect. It can get ugly.

I have nothing to contribute on the clothing front (except to say Brrrr!), but thought in light of the previous topic, that you might enjoy today's NYT article on cooking turkey - http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/16/dining/16turk.html (if the link doesn't work, it's called "The Pilgrims Didn't Brine" and it's in today's Dining section)

jeans/cords - it's true, the wind wips right through sweats. I also grew up in North Dakota! Long johns under the sweats would give them near equal warming power.
Posted by:Tanya | November 16, 2005 at 09:03 PM
I'm going to vote for whatever is thick enough. My kids have some awsome, thick sweatpants, and some nice thick cords/jeans, and some wussy, thin versions of both.
You can always layer if he's going to be out for awhile.
Posted by:wookie | November 16, 2005 at 10:15 PM
Neither. You need that second layer of long underwear underneath.
Posted by:Jujubee | November 17, 2005 at 01:15 PM
Listen to the native North Dakotas...we not only know cold, we know wind. Sweatpants = paper towels. You are right on that one. Jeans cut the wind better, but layers are necessary if you are out for any length of time.
Posted by:Tammi | November 17, 2005 at 03:11 PM
I'm in Wisconsin and I agree with Tammi. Sweats are warmer if there is no wind, but if there is any kind of wind then jeans are better. Cords work okay on cold but not windy days, because that little thin line between the cord wales is like a wind sieve. Jeans plus some underneath layer is the ideal.
A couple of winters ago I discovered SILK longjohns. They fit under normal jeans and are completely warm. They even sell turtlenecks and low-cut waisted long johns, so you don't have to roll to the tops over under low jeans.
http://www.wintersilks.com/ Sadly, they don't sell children's.
Nate, I did put my boys in tights under pants in winter. They are both in college now, slightly metrosexual though neither lacks for female attention, so I don't think it hurt them any. (We bought tights for Robin Hood costumes, then realized how perfect they worked for winter.)

Jeans or cords, not sweatpants. I learned this the year I went hunting with my father. Definitely the jeans. And if you can layer them, all the better. WalMart has "longjohn" type things for kids that you can put underneath.
