The surgeon examined Caroline for a minute or two and decided to get an ultrasound done on the mass. They called over to the hospital's radiology department and they fit her in immediately, which was nice.
"I have a little one year old baby here in clinic," said the receptionist over the phone, "and she's ADORABLE. Also, she needs a chest wall scan and she needs it today."
I loved that woman.
We went to Radiology, found out that we should have gone to Admitting, went to Admitting, sat there for ten minutes after she asked me if anything had changed since Caroline's last visit (the hip dysplasia check, I think - and no) and then took me line by line through possible changes (same insurance? yes. same telephone? yes. same address? yes. same zip code? aaiiiiiieeee.) Finally we were released back to Radiology where I had to pin Caroline down while they did her ultrasound.
And that was it. The tech checked with the radiologist to see if he wanted anything else and then we left. The surgeon had said that he will look at the images in the morning and give me a call.
So I know nothing more today than I did yesterday but I might be better informed tomorrow. I should probably get that tattooed on my face.
Edward and Caroline discovered a jumbo magnifying glass of Patrick's this afternoon. Much hilarity ensued.
Well, Caroline and I thought he was funny.
I hope your little girl is alright. It must have been hard keeping her still for the radiologists. O.O
Also, those pictures are so cute!

Oh, Julia -- I haven't commented before but just wanted to say hang in there... tomorrow you'll at least know what you're dealing with.
And those pictures are priceless. Looks pretty hilarious to me!

Oh that is very funny and cute. Glad they were able to see her speedily. I hope they will call tomorrow and say it was nothing.
Posted by: Wasabi | January 14, 2009 at 10:49 PM
I'm very hopeful that you get good news tomorrow from the doctor.
What fantastic pictures--your kids are just lovely.
Posted by: Jen | January 14, 2009 at 10:53 PM
It's adorable. And I will be right here waiting for the news tomorrow.
Posted by: JuliaKB | January 14, 2009 at 10:57 PM
oh Cricket what has she done to your hair? absolutely adorable... and of course I hope the news is complete nonevent.
Posted by: tree town gal | January 14, 2009 at 11:07 PM
the top picture is wonderful. She's in full laugh-mode and he's eating it up. They're lovely.
Posted by: Catherine | January 14, 2009 at 11:08 PM
They are the cutest. Hoping to hear good news from you tomorrow.
Posted by: grace413 | January 14, 2009 at 11:43 PM
They're so cute. I hope you get good news soon.
Oh, and in relation to your last post, he does look like he knows where to get a decent bouillabaisse!

Thanks for updating. I was such a nong I googled "idontremember" to see what it was (doh).

Gosh they are darling together. I love the pic with Caroline and Edward holding hands. (I notice that you never call her Sweet Caroline -- it just doesn't seem to fit Her Majesty, does it? Even if she does have bangs!)
I do hope her lump is something boring and benign like a fatty lump. (I'm sure there is a scientific name for these weird things but my dad seems to have a zillion of them, on his scalp and his neck and whatnot, and they're just ... well, fatty lumps.) Staying tuned, anxiously.

Fingers crossed that it's nothing, and that it will disappear by itself never to return. Quickly. And leave a thank you note and some chocolates.

Gorgeous pictures! i have boy/girl twins 1 year older than yours.. born 28 dec 2006. (and a son who is 4. oy.). the chaos and the craziness is constant but they really do amuse the hell out of each other. it is lovely to see your two larking about like that.
Anyway, i really wanted to de-lurk to wish your little girl a healthy result from the ultrasound.
Posted by: tasha | January 15, 2009 at 04:51 AM
They are absolutely gorgeous! What a top photo!
Posted by: serina | January 15, 2009 at 06:36 AM
Thank you for letting us know how Caroline is doing, even if it to say you have no information. I'm glad you are getting the reassurance from an ultrasound, although I can't imagine it was easy to have to pin down such an active baby.
Those pictures are very cute. I agree that it looks like a good time and I'm sure it was highly amusing. I've noticed that older brother's toys are some of my baby's favorites. To the point where he crawls into his brother's playroom and selects one to bring back out with him.

Child 3 had lumps on its neck which, being close to some of that glandular whootsit had me tied in knots for a few days. I believe the official diagnosis was: lumpy kid. It has lived up to that ever since. Lovely, lovely pictures - particularly Caroline having to lean back from the force of her laugh!
Posted by: Megan | January 15, 2009 at 07:41 AM
Oh, I love that first picture.
And i hear you about waiting for test results. We are currently waiting for results of a gene test on our youngest, to determine whether he has a metabolic disease. In the meantime we have to treat him as if he does indeed have the disorder, and I am just kind of counting down the days on the calendar, you know?
I hope the results come soon. I love the pictures of your twins interacting, you really catch their relationship well in pictures.

I guess we should always hope that we will be better informed tomorrow , shouldn't we? Here's hoping you get an answer today that can be dealt with easily.
How fun that Edward and Caroline can keep each other, and you, entertained so well, the cuties.
Posted by: Pam L | January 15, 2009 at 07:48 AM
So glad they expedited the process; can't wait to hear it is nothing and your shiny, beautiful little girl is free to lick straight lines down glass doors with no concern to anyone ...
Posted by: Elizabeth_K | January 15, 2009 at 08:26 AM
I had a lump the size of a walnut removed from my face (next to my nose) at ages 3, 5, 8 & 13 -- I think it was something slightly different every time (guess I'm a freak), and I don't remember the long medical names, but none of them were at all serious. If it weren't on my face, they might not have removed it at all. (And I think back then they also wanted to get it out to make sure they were right about what it was.) Hope all is well!
Posted by: Miriam | January 15, 2009 at 08:43 AM
I think the first one (giant Edward chin) is hilarious!
Cold enough for ya?
Sheesh. Will my toes ever be warm again?
Posted by: Tine | January 15, 2009 at 09:33 AM
Funny X 10!
Posted by: Elin | January 15, 2009 at 10:05 AM
That first pic is hysterical. She really looks like you in that one, and she doesn't usually, what with the dark-complectedness :) SOOO CUTE!
Posted by: Erin | January 15, 2009 at 10:11 AM
Oh, I feel for you on the waiting! I do hope they call in a timely manner.
That first photo is wonderful. *smile*
Posted by: Beth | January 15, 2009 at 10:38 AM
The pictures are cute, incredibly cute.
And to reassure you, they don't let you leave if it's something bad. Really.
It still might be just a fatty lump, but if it was anything more, you'd still be there getting more scans and tests and things. Cause they wouldn't let you leave.
Posted by: Aurelia | January 15, 2009 at 11:01 AM
My dad (and husband and dogs) also has lots of those benign fatty-lump thingies. The label the docs (and vets) usually give them is "lipoma."
Posted by: Katherine | January 15, 2009 at 11:04 AM
That was so nice they fit her in right away. I love when people do the right thing like that. And she is adorable!!! They all are!
Posted by: Heather | January 15, 2009 at 11:25 AM
I'm banking on Aurelia's comment, because it's 12:30 lunchtime Thursday on the East Coast, and I can't stop checking for updates. All digits crossed for good news.
Posted by: Jan | January 15, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Oh those pictures are sweet! And my little man has the same sweater as adorable Edward. Your two really are so cute together!
I hope the scan reveals something very very boring and all is well.
Posted by: Sarah | January 15, 2009 at 12:04 PM
The receptionist was right - she IS adorable. Edward is pretty cute too!
Posted by: Kristen | January 15, 2009 at 12:15 PM
I can't stop thinking of your little Cricket...I'm so glad you moved the appointment up. I'll be waiting and hoping for good news.

Responding here to the whiny kid problem. I didn't have it too bad with that but I did employ the "I can't understand you when you talk like that" or something to that effect when it was happening. The jello body, slip to the floor or just being difficult resulted in the child being left on the floor, if it was in a safe place, if it wasn't imperative that we be doing something, going somewhere. Most of the problems with my first revolved around getting dressed to go somewhere, often to the day car house so i could go to work. There was no deep message to decode here, he didn't want to go, didn't want ME to go to work etc. He was given the option of going in his pj's if he didn't stop resisting, which he didn't like either. If he had to be dressed and would not cooperate, I would dress him as best I could. I would say "we can do this the easy way, or the hard way" not meaning I would be rough, just no fun, I was a blank face not playing into his trying to push my buttons. It helped to detach myself from the behavior and not get upset, which never helps. Whiny kids were left to get over it on their own , maybe take a nap, until they could be civil again.

Thinking of you and precious Caroline.
Posted by: April | January 15, 2009 at 04:09 PM
Oh, she IS adorable, as is Edward. Hoping you get a GOOD phone call. Kids are so delicious I am betting the receptionist wanted to eat her up. Sometimes as a chaplain I can't help myself when a family brings in an adorable baby visitor, so I go down to the family and introduce myself and say, "I'm here to eat him/her up; such a GORGEOUS baby!" It can be a tiny flicker of sunshine for the family and I get to see the baby so it is a HUGE flicker of sunshine for me.

I have a picture of Emily with some pigtails very similar to Miss Caroline's, but hers were even higher on her head. It's now one of our favorite pictures of her. (love that he called her Cricket, btw)
I hope all turns out well with her scans - I know waiting for results is so hard.
Both children are absolutely adorable, by the way. I just love seeing their pictures.
Posted by: Mandy | January 15, 2009 at 04:22 PM
I thought when I scrolled down I might see a picture of E & C using the magnifying glass to set fire to ladybugs or something.
Posted by: Molly | January 15, 2009 at 05:26 PM
My LO has had to have a head x-ray before, and my but the do squirm. Especially when it is something that requires them to be still! In my experience the radiologist on rounds reviews films/scans immediately and won't let you go until they decide it is benign. Sending lots of benign vibes!!
Posted by: peanutsmama | January 15, 2009 at 06:01 PM
Those babies are adorable!!
Posted by: Monica C. | January 15, 2009 at 06:08 PM
Yay for doctors (and staff) who get you in right away to appointments. Glad you will know soon, and thinking good thoughts.
Posted by: suz | January 15, 2009 at 09:37 PM
Fingers crossed. Thank goodness for special favors for BEAUTIFUL babies!
Posted by: jenn | January 16, 2009 at 08:23 AM
oh my goodness - they are the cutest ever. And, the pictures are hysterical. My real reason for commenting though-- post an update on how what the doctor told you. I hope all is well!! I keep refreshing to check in on you.
Posted by: Hobbes | January 16, 2009 at 01:31 PM
Also checking constantly, and thinking about you all.
Posted by: J | January 16, 2009 at 01:39 PM
Julia, your kids are the cutest, and I am not using those words lightly. I really hope you - and we - will hear some good news today. I absolutely understand how you feel - my 5 month old boy was recently tested for cystic fibrosis and the time between the doctor's telling me she wanted the test and the arrival of the results (negative) was completely gut-wrenching. Fingers crossed!!!
Posted by: Katerina | January 16, 2009 at 02:53 PM
Not sure if someone's already commented on this, but in those pics Caroline looks just like the "Boo" character in Monsters Inc. Sending good vibes your way about the test results.
Posted by: Janna | January 16, 2009 at 04:00 PM
I hope you've received good news and are just enjoying life. Because you can NOT be enjoying this weather. Ugh. Chicago was at -16 this am. I'm going to move to Phoenix.
LOVE the pics
Posted by: Toni | January 16, 2009 at 05:33 PM
Waiting is horrible and I've been thinking about you all day. In fact, I've been checking in all day to see if there was an update. So, still thinking of you.
I'm waiting too. My 2 year old daughter has asthma and it was recently discovered that she has a heart murmur. My online research tells me that most murmurs aren't serious, but coupled with asthma...I'm worried. So. There it is. We shall wait together.
Posted by: Meegan | January 16, 2009 at 07:37 PM
Caroline obviously thinks Edward is a fricking riot! I LOVE that first picture.
Good Luck with Caroline's scan
