downtown montreal is a place called "the horse's ass" in French - or something similar. It's (obviously) a steak house but the food is divine -and you can watch them prep everything because there is seating around the sunken kitchen. yummy. jealous.

OMG keep Patrick's diaries. I have my trip diaries from about that age and they are HILARIOUS. I'm so glad I have them, especially since they mention grandparents now dead. Make sure to store them somewhere safe.

Pure brillance that Caroline! Tenty-ten! Exactly!

The Science Centre in Montreal is very nice, very kid-fun and friendly. And it's at the old port so right next to it is quay (I think they call it that? Maybe it's a wharf? A dock? Something like that) where you can get a tour boat ride. You need to look for a smallish wooden tour boat that gives kid-friendly hour-long tours, not one of the big dinner cruises. It's an awesome tour - he takes you around and shows you the Expo '67 housing, the place where you are out of the harbour and into the seaway because the current gets very fast, cool stuff like that. It's a perfect tour for kids and a great companion to the science centre. In fact, I'd probably pick it over the science centre, especially if you did the Sudbury Science Centre already. The Biodome is OK, but you know, you can get sick of museums after a while. Go on a boat ride!

so happy you are posting from the road!

I just returned from Montreal and assuming you have not yet been, I recommend this site : http://gocanada.about.com/od/montreal/tp/Old_Montreal.htm

It's what I used and I was very happy with my allocated one day.

THE place to eat was Le Jardin Nelson...

Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness! You ate at the DAIRY! I was born and raised in Deep River and the sheer coincidence of the one and only blogger that I read dropping by there for lunch fills me with total delight.

And I'm glad you liked Ottawa - my current hometown - too. I don't know Montreal well enough to make restaurant suggestions, but I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Canada. And the rest of your vacation as well!

Lunch at China Town, for authentic home made noodles, along with all other real tasty Chinese food - http://www.restonoodlefactory.com/-it's a place that you must eat at. The only problem is it's tiny, so try to avoid the peak hour 11:30 a - 12:30 p. Enjoy, boy, typing this made me hungry.

Thanks for some travel tips with three kids. I'm sure we'll attempt to do it when the boys are a little older. So far, we only traveled to Tennessee (10+ hours) for a wedding when they were infants and didn't know any better. Between a nine-year-old girl and two one-year-old boys, I'm not sure I'm ready yet, but some of your ideas would really work. And yes, Canadians are very nice. We were in Sudbury once when Phoebe was 4. Did you go to their Science Museum? It was awesome.

Tenty ten means Caroline understands the concept that 100 is 10 groups of 10. Not only do you have an escape artist, you have a genius level escape artist. Be afraid, be very afraid! This one is going to make you earn every gray hair.

Damn, I'm obviously way to late but I hoped you stumbled upon Mortimer Snodgrass in Old Montreal - a very cool store that I'm sure the entire family would have loved.

I'm in Ottawa, glad you liked the city. Did you do/see anything especially interesting here? Hope you give us a full report when you get back home! Happy travels!

You must Take care of yourself.

I adore Caroline. Seriously.

Naturally, Patrick and Edward are also loved, but Caroline, oh the little DEVIL. I wish I could hear her talk.

I've come to the conclusion that every family needs a Caroline. I stake claim on getting to share her vicariously with you. I adore all your kids but not being their parent I get the great joy of being able to have a favorite!
Caroline reminds me a great deal of myself, well except that I'm 57 and she's 2.

The character of "Bonnie" in Toy Store 3 has a bit of Caroline.

Toy StorY 3

Does eleventy-eleven come after tenty-ten?

Also, along the lines of your amazing parenting, Julia, do you ever get mad enough to shout "Come back here" "Stop" etc?

Hope you are enjoying your vacation!

I. Can't. Stop. Laughing at the comment by someone that said to tell Steve he was secretly baptized. I had to share that with my husband (we were both raised JW's). SO funny...they CAN be very nice people, and in a group, at least you know they won't be swearing at their kids, smoking around you or stealing your stuff...but then they start talking religion and my eyes roll back into my head. Ugh.

Thanks for all the tips about the backpacks. I've started doing that for day trips, but we are going on a road trip (first time ever - 4 kids) to Iowa (Iowa? WHY!!!) this summer and found your tips very helpful :)

Thanks for the laugh!
